National Employee Wellness Month brings awareness to the importance of creating healthier and more physically active communities in the workplace and the critical role a proactive approach towards wellness plays in reducing national healthcare costs. Created by Virgin HealthMiles in partnership with The Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, this second annual initiative provides a vehicle for educating both employers and employees about the benefits of preventative health within the workplace. Following the success of last year’s National Employee Wellness Month, we are pleased to welcome a new sponsor, the Institute for Health and Productivity Management, to the program this year. In addition, National Employee Wellness Month has moved to June for its second annual year in efforts to continue building awareness and participation in the program. June is an ideal month for this program as it marks the mid-point of the year and is a meaningful milestone to reflect back on corporate and personal health goals.

Workplace wellness is crucial as healthcare costs rise at unsustainable rates. Even with the enactment of healthcare reform, government can’t do it alone and the private sector has recognized the critical role it must play in slowing the rise of healthcare costs.

Virgin HealthMiles, the STOP Obesity Alliance, and the Institute for Health and Productivity Management are encouraging companies to take a leadership position in encouraging employees to become more physically active, and by doing so, help prevent lifestyle-related chronic health conditions that account for three-quarters of our nation’s spiraling healthcare costs.

More than 80 organizations and over 20,000 of their employees have lent their support to the second annual National Employee Wellness Month and will participate in a 3-week step challenge beginning June 1st. This fun, competitive component highlights the important relationship between increased physical activity and good health. These organizations and their employees also shared their opinions and insights into workplace wellness.
